What If My Venue Uses DJs, Trivia, or Live Music Along With Custom Channels?

Music played through the Custom Channels player is fully licensed—including ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR. Music from DJs, live bands, karaoke, or trivia events is not covered and may require separate PRO licenses.

Why Are the PROs Still Contacting Me?

PROs like ASCAP and BMI are correct in saying that music played by DJs, trivia hosts, or live performers is not covered under your Custom Channels subscription. The music played during these events:

  • Is not provided by Custom Channels

  • Is not reported or tracked by Custom Channels

  • Is often mixed from personal collections (which requires a separate license)

This is why the PROs say Custom Channels does not cover the licensing in these situations—because that part of your music usage falls outside of our coverage.

Why Does It Cost More?

Licenses for live music, DJs, or interactive events are more expensive because they cover music sources that aren’t pre-cleared and require separate permissions.

If your venue is being quoted ~$400/month, that may include:

  • Coverage for live DJ performances

  • Coverage for multiple venues in your group

  • Public performances outside of Custom Channels usage

What Can You Do?

  • Review exactly where and when non-Custom Channels music is being used.
(Ex: Only Friday nights at one venue? Only for trivia?)
The more specifically you can document this, the more likely PROs are to negotiate or reduce your fees.

  • Only play music through Custom Channels when possible—it’s fully covered and avoids extra licensing hassles.

  • Clarify with the PROs which specific venues and nights need coverage (vs. your venues that use Custom Channels exclusively).

Remember:

  • Music from DJs, trivia hosts, or live performers is NOT covered by Custom Channels.
  • Music played through the Custom Channels player IS fully licensed.
